Tips for Saving Money with Startup Costs

Many moms would love to start their own business, but assume they need several thousand dollars to do so. This is absolutely not the case. Depending on the business you start you might not even need to barely reach into your purse for initial costs. Other businesses will need a little money upfront, but there are a lot of things you can do to cut expenses. Do not let lack of funds stop you from realizing your dream.

Skip the Expensive Website

Do you need a website? Probably! There are few businesses these days that can be successful without a website. However, you do not have to pay big money to get started. You can use a WordPress self-hosted blog and make it look like a regular site thanks to premium themed and thoughtful widgets. You do not need to be a computer genius either. WordPress is super easy to use. Then, you can hook it up to a shopping cart, or simply accept payments via PayPal and Google Checkout. You can always add additional options later.

Do Not Pay for an Expensive Logo

A quality logo is important, but you do not have to go through a big name, expensive company to get one. Hire a freelance graphic designer from a freelance website. You will be surprised at what a great logo you can get for a fraction of the cost. If your rough drawing looks like your 2-year-old created it, perhaps send the freelancer samples of other logos you like, so he has a better understanding of what you are after. Also, ask if he can create the logo for you in both high and low resolution. This way, it can be used online and in print.

Use Free Services

If you are like most moms, you are happy to take free stuff wherever you can get it. After all, diapers, food, and school supplies are expensive. Any money you save can be used somewhere else. Mail Chimp allows you to easily create email marketing campaigns while Survey Monkey lets you create surveys, so you can get better acquainted with your target customer. PicMonkey is a user-friendly photo editing tool, and Outright helps you manage your financials, so you can skip that expensive accounting software. The Internet is full of free services, if you look hard enough. Some of these do have a small charge, but offer a lengthy free introductory, so you can try it and make sure it is something that will really benefit your business.

Do-it-Yourself

You are a mother, which means that even with a cape, you are capable of handling much more than you probably even know. A few things you can do yourself include:

  • Create an RSS Feed – Feedburner allows you to create an RSS feed, so followers of your blog receive updates automatically.
  • Create Letterhead – Spend a little time on Google Docs, and you will find out how easy it is to create your own letterhead.
  • Set up Google Analytics – If you created your site, surely you can handle this little task. Google Analytics will keep you informed on where your traffic is coming from and which pages they are visiting while on your site.
